Research Study

Purpose and statement of problem

Through development of a cross-disciplinary cooperation between the musical therapist and the care providers in connection with a music therapeutical course, the following areas are being elucidated throughout this research project:

  • How can the musical and interpersonal competencies of the individual care provider be developed to the effect that in their relational meeting with persons suffering from dementia, the care provider is able to proceed forward and transfer new knowledge and acquired skills to the daily nursing and care through the application of tangible tools from the musical activities?
  • What impact does the dedicated emphasis on development of the care provider’s musical and interpersonal competencies have on life quality and well-being among persons suffering from dementia?

Target group

The target group of this project is persons suffering from dementia living in a dementia cohabitation unit in a care facility as well as the persons providing care for the persons with dementia in the dementia cohabitation unit.

Research methods and approach

The emphasis of the project is the relational meeting between the person suffering from dementia and the care provider in which musical therapy is the joint focal point of construction and development of the relation. To make the relational meeting the object of this project is founded on the basic assumption that it is the professional care provider who has the responsibility for the quality of the relation to the person suffering from dementia.

Inspired by action research, the research method of the project is an action-oriented research method based on active and cross-functional cooperation between the practicians (the care providers), the music therapist and the researcher. Emphasis will be on the application of knowledge and theory in clinical practice as well as further development of therapeutical nursing methods that can contribute to the advancement of life quality and well-being among persons suffering from dementia. In addition emphasis will be on the creation of learning, deep insight and explicit change, improved options available as well as development of new skills and knowledge. Dementia Care Mapping is the applied method.

Methodically the project is organized as a case study of a music therapy course in which both process data with emphasis on the learning process of the practicians, outcome data with emphasis on the effect of the course in relation to the persons suffering from dementia as well as follow-up data that assess the effect of the course in connection with the effect of the learning process of the practicians are included.
