Summary
This project consists of two separate clinical outcome studies in paediatric patients. The aim of study 1 are to examine the short- and long-term effects of designed music medicine (designed receptive music-assisted relaxation and imagery - DR.MARI) on nausea, vomiting, mood, relaxation and perception of cancer and chemotherapy in paediatric cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy. The aim of study 2 is to examine the short-term effects of procedural music therapy support on anxiety, distress and pain in paediatric urology patients during IV-starts.
Background
At the Danish somatic hospitals music therapy is almost unknown and a unestablished profession (Sanfi 2006a). Though the music therapy literature (Standley 1996; Dileo 2004; Robb 2003; Myskja 2000) has provided evidence and a rationale for implementing music therapy and music medicine in hospitals´ treatment plans, only two Danish music therapists have gained limited experience in the somatic area. The short-term purpose of the project is to investigate the effects and meaning of music therapy and music medicine (designed music-narratives) in paediatric cancer and urology
patients. The long-term purpose of the project is to provide Danish research and clinical experience, which is needed in order to establish the music therapy profession in Danish paediatric hospitals.
Research questions - study 1
1. What are the short- and long-term effects of designed music medicine used once a day during chemotherapy on nausea and womiting? 2. What are the short-term effects of designed music medicine used once a day during chemotherapy on the participants´ mood state and relaxation? 3. What are the long-term effects of designed music medicine used once a day during chemotherapy on the participants´ attitude towards cancer and perception of chemotherapy?
Research questions - study 2
1. What are the short-term effect of paediatric procedural music therapy support on perceived control of anxiety during IV-start in paediatric urology patients?
2. What are the short-term effect of procedural music therapy support on perceived control of distress during IV-start in paediatric urology patients?
3. What are the short-term effect of procedural music therapy support on perceived control of pain during IV-start in paediatric urology patients?
Design
Study 1 uses a fixed method design measuring quantitative data.
Study 2 uses a fixed method design (RCT).
