Summary:

The main objective of this PhD project is to determine whether Parents' Counseling (PC), given by a qualified and experienced music therapist, contributes to parent-child interaction, in which parents adopt MT-like techniques of their choice, while approaching their children with ASD. All parents participating in the study will be given PC sessions, but within minimal number of PC and full number of PC sessions. Different counseling tools will be at use, according to their children's participation or lack of participation in MT treatment. The study is designed as mixed-methods - QUAN(qual) or QUAN+QUAL, as will become clearer as the study develops. The trial combines PC process, questionnaires and interviews, in order to formulate a working protocol, serving as guidelines for other music therapists working with parents of children with ASD.

Research Questions:

  1. Does Parents' Counseling, given by a Music Therapist (MTPC) enhance parent-child interaction between parents and their children with Autistic Spectrum Disorder? In what way?
  2. For parents whose children received MT - What are each parent's reflections regarding the child's participation in music therapy after watching short video clips from the music therapy intervention?
  3. How do parents describe the use of music in everyday life before and after Parents' Counseling?
